This 2014 Colgar FRAL 401 6.3″ CNC floor-type horizontal boring mill is configured for large, heavy and difficult-to-position workpieces such as machine bases, large weldments, castings, housings and fabricated assemblies. Its traveling-column design provides 433″ of X-axis travel and 196.85″ of vertical Y-axis travel, while the substantial 16″ x 19.8″ ram provides 59″ of Z-axis travel and the boring spindle adds 35.4″ of W-axis quill travel for reaching deep features and machining locations across oversized parts.

The machine combines a 6.3″ spindle, 100 HP main spindle motor and Capto C10 spindle interface with a 98.5″ x 98.5″ rotary table rated for 66,000 lbs. The table’s 59″ infeed travel and 1° indexing add another means of positioning large workpieces, while two sets of 236″ x 236″ floor plates provide extensive setup area for parts that are better kept stationary while the traveling column moves along their length.

A major capability of this FRAL 401 is its package of interchangeable indexable right-angle machining heads, with Capto C10, C8 and C6 interfaces and spindle speeds up to 3,000 RPM depending on the head. These auxiliary heads expand access to additional workpiece faces and difficult machining locations without repeatedly repositioning a large part. Combined with the Heidenhain iTNC 530 CNC control, 80-position automatic tool changer, Renishaw probing and 220 PSI through-spindle coolant, this configuration is particularly relevant to large-part contract machining, heavy equipment, energy and industrial fabrication operations requiring flexible boring, drilling and milling capability.
